Israel is facing increasing pressure to halt the fighting in Gaza as civilian deaths mount, including those of three hostages killed by Israeli troops while waving a white flag. The latest appeal comes from France’s foreign minister, who called for an “immediate and durable” truce with Hamas following a similar call from her German and British counterparts. The US and the EU have designated Hamas a terrorist organization. Israel has been trying to destroy the Palestinian militant group since its October 7 terror attacks.
Friday’s mistaken hostage killings have shocked Israelis, with relatives saying the release of their loved ones should be their government’s priority. It surely doesn’t seem so.
