What struggles are Israeli activists facing in their anti-war movement? | Portal E.M. Cioran News ▶️

December 28, 2023 | The Hamas attack on October 7th sent shockwaves through Israeli society. The killing of more than 1100 people, mostly civilians, has fueled hypernationalism and created a climate in which those who express solidarity with Palestinians risk being called traitors or terrorist sympathisers.

But even at a time when most Israelis support their government’s war effort, there are Israeli activists who, despite the abuse, continue to pursue peace. Presenter: Anelise Borges. Guests: Robi Damelin (The Parents Circle), Neta Heiman (activist), Tal Mitnick (human rights activist).

Netanyahu:

Now go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.

The voice of reason: 18-year-old activist Tal Mitnick has been sentenced to 30 days in Israeli prison for conscientious objection to partake in the military slaughter of innocent Gazans, women and children in the first place. The Jewish Chronicle, December 28, 2023.

Sofi Orr: Israeli conscientious objector refuses to be part of ‘endless cycle of bloodshed’

Sofi Orr, who has refused to enlist in the Israeli army, tells Al Jazeera that she will not take part in what she describes as the Israeli army’s “violent policies of oppression and apartheid”.

“I choose to refuse because there is no military solution to a political problem, and now with the war that has become more apparent than ever,” she said from the town of Pardes Hanna. Orr explained that she hoped to reach young Israelis, even though she described herself as being part of a minority.

Orr explained that left-wing activists, and especially Palestinian citizens of Israel, faced repression for their beliefs and positions. Hopes to reach young Israelis in particular, because peace is the only option. ‘There are seven million Palestinians here and seven million Israeli Jews here, and no one is going anywhere.’ “I am worried, but it’s worth it, because if only one person hears my words, and it makes them think, then it’s worth it and I’m willing to endure the consequences of that,” Orr added.

An 18-year-old Israeli activist was arrested and sentenced to 30 days in prison after he refused to enlist in the army. Tal Mitnick denounced Israel’s war in Gaza and refused to sign for mandatory conscription. In Israel, it’s mandatory for men to serve 32 months in the IDF when they turn 18. For women, it’s 24 months. “Slaughter can’t solve slaughter,” Mitnick said in a video just moments before he walked into a military base to announce his decision, which led to his arrest.

Tal Matnick, an 18-year-old from Tel Aviv, has become the first conscientious objector to be jailed for refusing compulsory military service during Israel’s war on Gaza.

His friend, Iddom Elam, announced solidarity, stating, “The current war is a revenge war against the whole of Gaza.”

Matnick, motivated by his opposition to the conflict in Gaza, is serving a 30-day sentence, with the possibility of an extension. This act of resistance has garnered support, with promises from friends to follow his lead in rejecting military service, a norm for almost every adult in Israel’s Defence Forces.

Tel Aviv protest leader says only an end to occupation can bring security for Israel

Al Jazeera’s Sara Kahirat spoke to Alon Lee Green, who told her that the goals of the movement are the achievement of a ceasefire, the return of Israeli captives and an end to the killing of innocent people in Gaza. “We understand that this way of one war after the other has achieved nothing. It achieved only destruction and death and more hatred between the people,” Green told Al Jazeera. Kahirat joins live from Tel Aviv.
