“The Flag and the Cross: white Christian nationalism and the threat to American democracy” – Samuel Perry & Philip Gorsky | Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty ▶️

Dr. Samuel Perry and Dr. Philip Gorski join BJC Executive Director Amanda Tyler for a conversation about their new book, titled The Flag and the Cross: White Christian Nationalism and the Threat to American Democracy.

Gorski and Perry are sociologists, who teach respectively at Yale University and the University of Oklahoma, and have documented the rise of white Christian nationalism in the United States. This webinar was broadcast live on May 16, 2022, just days after the shooting in Buffalo, New York, and the authors explained that the white supremacist views the shooter expressed in an online statement line up with classic Christian nationalist beliefs and rhetoric, even though the killer admitted to not being a Christian.

An award-winning scholar and teacher, Dr. Samuel Perry is among the nation’s leading experts on conservative Christianity and American politics, race, families, and sexual behavior. He has been recognized as among the top sociologists in the world in terms of research productivity and impact.

Philip S. Gorski is a comparative-historical sociologist with strong interests in theory and methods and in modern and early modern Europe. His empirical work focuses on topics such as state-formation, nationalism, revolution, economic development and secularization with particular attention to the interaction of religion and politics.
